Mike Giannelli as Art the Clown
-
Role: Main Antagonist
-
Film: The 9th Circle (2008)
-
Actor: Mike Giannelli
-
Debut Appearance: This short film marks the first on-screen appearance of Art the Clown.
Summary:
Art the Clown is a silent, sadistic, and enigmatic killer who appears without warning and wreaks havoc with terrifying precision. In The 9th Circle, he serves as the initial threat—a seemingly deranged clown who abducts a young woman from a deserted train platform and delivers her into the clutches of a demonic cult.
Portrayed by Mike Giannelli, Art uses exaggerated facial expressions, mime-like movements, and a blend of dark humor and cruelty to unsettle both his victims and the audience. Despite having no dialogue, Giannelli’s performance makes Art feel unpredictably dangerous. His portrayal is marked by an unnerving physicality and a sense of gleeful malice, helping to establish the character’s now-iconic presence.
Significance:
Though The 9th Circle features supernatural horror at its core, Art the Clown is its most memorable figure, acting as a human(ish) gateway to the infernal realm. Giannelli’s portrayal laid the groundwork for what would become one of indie horror’s most notorious villains. Art would later return—played by David Howard Thornton—in Terrifier (2016) and its sequels, but this short film is where the nightmare began.
